Installing games on external HD - Windows won't allow the drive to be safely removed

Update: Process Explorer tells me that explorer.exe is always checking a folder called Roaming State on the WpSystem folder in my external HD, preventing it from safely being removed. The computer was marked to be my offline device, so I thought it could be this. Unchecking this option and then installing a new game (and running it, to make sure every step of installation happens) changed nothing.

As soon as I uninstall the game (which deleted the folder in question), explorer stopped looking for it and I could safely remove the external HD.

I've never had an issue and I use small keychain flash drives and external HD. I don't want stuff fluttering my xbox hd that I don't frequently use... I've never had a problem. The safe remove option is more for when your inserting and removing flash
drives while power is on like pc and laptops.

there is no other way if you don't format the external hd drive, it won't recognize your files, it only recognizes games installed directly by it, with the restoration it doesn't have the installation files that are located in the windows folder, and there is no way to add them manually.

Thanks for the update on the issue. Try installing the game specifically on the internal drive instead of the external drive. Once installed and launch, then move it to the external HD. Personally have had this issue with games on an external drive. Once
installed on internal they worked great.

I don't like suggesting a factory reset but it could be the only option, you can remove the external HDD so any games on there will be safe,Also once you have your console settings setup try installing the game to your internal drive before you plug your
external drive in.
