  1. Installing Game From Disc to USB - Still Need Game Disc?

    hello all,

i'm new here so please excuse my question, but i heard that playing a game on the xbox 360 directly from the disc all the time could result in scratches and wear/tear. therefore, i did some research and discovered that you can use a flash drive (USB) and
install the game there. i also checked the xbox 360 support section to find out how to do this (xbox home, select game, press X, and install).

i believe i performed all functions correctly. i checked 'storage' after installation and i see that the game (kinect adventures) shows at approximately 4.5gb on the usb drive. i eject the game and select it on the menu to play it.

then, it requests that i insert the game disc to play.

what is the point of installing it on a USB drive if you still have to insert the game disc to play? if the game disc were to ever get scratched, would the flash drive game essentially be worthless?

    thank you.

    :)

Installed game still reads from the disc drive.

Sorry to tell you this but all installed games still need the disc to play. It's done to prevent people from renting/borrowing games, installing them, then returning the disc and keeping the installed files. Installing games is mostly for improved loading
    times. Sorry about that...

it needs to be in the system only to verify that you own the game it still reads from the files on the flash drive. this is to keep people from buying or renting a game installing it to a hard drive and or flash drive then getting rid of the game disc.

Can a Flash Drive be used to install and play games?

You can install most games to USB Memory Units. I believe MW3 falls into this category. You will still need the disc for disc checks. As the disc checks are not limited to just checking on the edge of the DVD, the scratch may still cause problems.

Your friend is wrong about copying an install from one storage device to another. Installs are locked to the console and storage device that the install was performed to. They cannot be copied.
