Install and Download Sizes for Upcoming Titles

I don't know about you guys, but I'm severely hoping something is done about the huge size of the titles that arrived at launch. I'm not going to pretend I've massively read into whether this is an issue that can be resolved or is being modified or what..
But after having to wait in excess of 9 or so hours for Titanfall to download a massive 40gb (Because not every one has 50/100mb fibreoptic..) and what felt like aaaaages for Ghosts to install, it's just taking far, far too long to actually get from purchase
to playing games.

Is there any point having discs when it takes a mandatory install for every game anyway at these sizes?

With these download sizes, how was it ever going to be a good or a viable idea at all to have purely download-only games?

download only is far too expensive at present, thats why people still buy disk

 

With disc-based games, part of the issue with install times is that if there's a patch available for the game, that's downloaded first. For people with slower download speeds, that's going to increase a process that already takes a bit too long IMO. With
a game like Titanfall that's online-only, that's unavoidable, but if a game has a single player mode it should install enough of that to let you start playing, then download the update after the disc install has finished.

I would expect MS to improve the disc install situation as time goes on.

One thing you can do with downloads is, if you have a friend who has the game on disc, you can install it using that, then purchase the downloadable version. That unlocks the game that's already installed on your hard drive. MS will hopefully offer a pre-load
option too, so you can download a game before release and it'll unlock on release day. Outside of that, and devs using compression techniques to try and make download sizes as small as possible, there's no much that can be done.

 

Compression is something I'd hope they'd improve, because right now it seems a bit ridiculous how large they are in content size.

As it goes with download being too expensive etc, I disagree, I wouldn't want to have download only as the only format for my games, I like to actually have something to show for what I've paid for and coming from my 360 in which the HD had issues and tended
to be slow/corrupt. For example I downloaded Crackdown on the Games with gold promotion and it never ever boots up consistently, it boots up and just black screens most of the time and it's been deleted and downloaded multiple times.

The COD Ghosts map packs and dlc takes forever to load in to the point of where I get kicked for inactivity in games.. I know it's probably my HD and not a wide spread problem, but with stuff like this happening why would I want a full game I'd paid for
and release price to potentially do the same thing?

 

It doesn't bother me ,games are available at midnight.I start to download,go to bed,go to work and when i got back everything is downloaded....

So far,most of games are around 20GB which isn't "that big",just few hours to dowload.

My only game on disc is Forza 5 ,all the rest are digital and got no issues.

If you are unable to get a faster speed, that is one thing. But if you are sitting there with nex-gen hardware, expecting magical next generation games and are only paying for tier 1 internet speeds, well that is a different matter. Anti-up and get something
better...

Now that being said... yeah, it is a slow process but as Tzar said... purchase game and start to install/dl it and go do something else... like play another game or go to sleep..

I have read you can dos connect from the net while you install disc as it will go much faster... not sure of works.. as I went digital..

I get about 10 Gb downloaded every 10 minutes to so...and I do it off of a wireless connection..

 

I don't have issues Titanfall took me 15 or so mins to download

These games are already 'heavily compressed', for example Titanfall has a full 20GB of audio compressed (the download totals just over 20GB). Fact is this is the size of modern games (10-50GB).

I understand the annoyance this causes (I had to wait 8 hours for BF4 to download on Day one), although there are possible workarounds - if they allow us to pre-download digital games a few days before release to be ready to play.

Digital is too expensive, makes no sense, e.g. TitanFall is always £50 digitally and can be found at £35 for a retail disc.

Also I know this may sound lazy, but it is so awesome flicking between games without moving from your seat.

100% agree, they should allow us to pre-download games! Going by recent reports it looks like Microsoft are looking into it.

 

It is what it is. Next gen games average at about 40gb and that size is set to increase over time as games get more ambitious. The sizes wont decrease. It all comes down to having fast internet speeds. I have 152Mb connection so games only take about 10-15
mins to install which is great. If you're stuck with a slow connection then there is nothing you can do but wait and wait for downloads to finish. Pre-downloading will certainly help so downloading can start a day or two before release.

 

@Hellfire you could not be more wrong about digital codes. I thought once I pointed you to my UK Xbox Deals thread? If not a TF digital code can be bought for £26.99(sale ends today)
