  1. Increase download speeds with wired connection?

I'm currently trying to download GTA 5, but it is taking forever its been 6 hours and its at 21%. I've read online that changing your dns can help speed up downloads, but will this have any affect on a wired connection. (I already changed my dns and haven't
    seen any improvement)

    :)

Slow download speed with Xbox 360 Slim

    Hey UndatedPrawn712!

    Thanks for that update.

Are you able to try using a wired connection to see if the download speed increases?

We'll be waiting for you to post back =)

  3. Slow network bug (Xbox One S Instant On)

Problem started yesterday when I replaced my XB1 with a new 2tb S model. My download speeds are 2-3mbps despite normally being 200-300mbps. Wired, hardwired, instant on, and power save, nothing increases speeds. Xbox network analysis shows I'm pulling down
288mbps and my actual download speed is still crap. I know it's now the console, I already did an exchange, same problem. My ISP is worthless and MS support not much better.

Increase download speeds with wired connection?

    Sorry.

The slow downloads are due to heavy traffic.

What you are proposing isn't going to help very much.

Changing your DNS improves speed wired or wireless. The speed increase will be dependent on what the default DNS was and what you changed it to. In my case switching to the Google DNS over the TWC defaults made a noticeable difference but your mileage may
    vary.

DNS won't have a effect on your download speeds, but could speed up you web browsing speeds. DNS translates names into IP addresses, so when you type google.com into a web browser, that request goes to the DNS and it resolves google.com to 64.233.183.139(or
what IP your DNS may resolve to) and then your computer connects to that IP address.

but wired or wireless will not make a difference, assuming the wireless signal is good.

Increase download speeds with wired connection?

DNS might change your browsing speeds depending on distance to the server. It will NOT effect downloads.

So when we connect to MS to download a file we are connecting to a single IP and downloading the entire file? Not chunked? Won't timeout?

things get a little complicated from here, most large networks will have load balancing and you could be connecting to different IP addresses, but everything is still broken up into packets, but instead of every outgoing packet hitting the DNS to be resolved
and sent to the IP address, your device will create a session with the host device, and then they start sending packets back and forth expecting responses from each other.

fun side note, you know when you start a download in Windows, or a transfer over a network and the estimated time for the completion starts off with like hours to transfer, then goes to minutes, then up to 30 minutes and it just continues to bounce around,
it is because of the session the two devices create, they try to cut down on the amount packets being broadcasted by the host device saying, "ok, you're downloading a large file, so instead sending a packet and waiting for a response from you saying you received
the packet, i'm going to send you 10(or however many packets) and you tell me if you receive all the packets." then when your computer receives all the packets it sends a reply saying that it did, then the host device says "well how about i send you 20 packets."
and they will continue on this path until your device says "no, i didn't receive all the packets" and then the host will drop down how many packets it's sending. and this is what causes that time estimate to bounce around when downloading or transferring a
    file.

    networking is fun -_-;

I agree that switching your DNS won't increase your download speed from a single server.

I'm assuming that's not the case when downloading these huge files. We were having this very discussion in the Blizzard forums several weeks ago in regards to peer to peer downloading, etc while downloading the recent expansion to WoW. You appear to know
more about it than I do......are you saying that it isn't helping to switch DNS's? How about on peer to peer? Does MS switch to peer to peer when servers get overloaded? (haven't read the ToS to see if we agreed to it or not)

i haven't done a packet capture on my network to see how packets are really handled, but i don't think MS using any type of P2P because that would basically be connecting to other Xbox Live users that have the same content and pulling some of it from them,
i believe MS is purely a client/server setup so you will get your download from nothing but a MS server.

the DNS really only has 1 job, accepting requests for host name resolution and respond with an IP address, so you will only contact the DNS once when contacting the server to start the download, then it will not be used again unless the session is terminated
    for some reason.

How do I install games faster????

Usually the best way to speed up a download is to have as few devices connected as possible to increase the bandwidth given to your console, but also not using any games or apps while downloading can increase the speed that the download will go at. If
possible you may want to consider switching to the wired/wireless form of connection depending on what one you're currently on to see if that will increase your download speed. Hope this helps!
