Inactive Xbox Gamertag/Closed Account

I want to change my Xbox gamertag to a name of an inactive gamertag. I just had a chat with Microsoft support and they have informed me that the person that had this gamertag closed their account, but it was not released back into the system yet. They
suggested I contact you to see if you can release it, since the last mass gamertag release was back in 2016. Thank you for your help.

Adding to this, just because it is inactive on Xbox, does not mean that the Microsoft account is inactive. As long as they keep using the account, then the gamertag will stay attached.

An account has to be inactive for two years now, before the account is closed.

Hi Laurene! I'm afraid you will have to wait for the next mass gamertag release that will eventually be performed within the next years.

Microsoft will close accounts that have been inactive for 2+ years, so probably those gamertags will return available.

I've contacted Microsoft, and while the issue was not resolved I was able to get more information. It seems that the impacted microsoft account was closed due to inactivity. This means that I will not be able to log into it anymore since it does not exist.
Since there is nothing they will be able to do about this, is there any way that xbox can fix a gamertag that is attached to an inactive microsoft account?

Thanks for posting1 We're unable to reset Gamertags over the forums, however keep in mind that inactive Gamertags are released every 5 years, but only if they've been inactive. Since these threads can turn into Gamertag request threads, this will be closed.
