Inactive xbox accounts

Adding to this, just because it is inactive on Xbox, does not mean that the Microsoft account is inactive. As long as they keep using the account, then the gamertag will stay attached.

An account has to be inactive for two years now, before the account is closed.

An inactive Xbox account will be deleted after being inactive for 5 years. If you have made a purchase on that account, It will not be deleted. My best advice would be to have a slight alteration of the desired username to be unique. As an example, if the
name Deathzone117 is taken, you can try . I hope this helps,

New policy is the account that has the gamertag attached to it has to be inactive for 5 years. The 5 years started from 2016 so the earliest that any inactive accounts will be released would be 2021.

Keep in mind that this means inactive for the MS account not just the xbox profile MS accounts are used for more then just xbox so even if it shows no use on the xbox side it may be being used on something else to do with MS.

After the last mass openings of inactive gamertags there was a new policy put into place that the ONLY way gamertags will be released is if the MS account that they are attached to has been inactive for FIVE years from 2016.

What this basically means is that the MS account attached to a tag can not be signed into anything to do with MS for five years starting in 2016 Keep in mind that the MS accounts are more then just Xbox so even if the account shows inactive on the Xbox the
account may be signed in elsewhere. If it is truly inactive the earliest that it will be released would be 2021 five years from the date that the policy was implemented.
