    Inactive gamer tags


    I would love to change my gamer tag to my stream handle. The person who has it isn't using it for a while and doesn't look to have any gamerpoints at all. At what point will it be voided if ever?

    Damn it. The account has been inactive for at least 8 years.

    When does Microsoft deem an account inactive long enough to warrant that "purge" of inactive gamer tags?

    Just to add,the 5 year rule started on Aug 30th 2016 for gamertags so the earliest any unused gamertag may be freed up is Aug 30th this year.As from Aug 2019 if the Microsoft account linked to a gamertag doesn't sign in for 2 years it may be freed up.

    Even then there is no guarantee that a tag will be made available.

    Gamertags are used on several Microsoft services,not just xbox live,so there is no way of knowing whether a tag is in use or not.

    I'm afraid there is currently no way to request a Gamertag that is already taken by an inactive/deactivated account.
