Inactive accounts and the new gamertag system

In 2016 it was announced that Microsoft accounts were subject to deletion after 5 years of inactivity. A year or to ago, I read that the period of inactivity was shortened from 5 to 2 years. If what I understand is correct this was done to free up gamertags
for active Xbox users. In late 2019 Microsoft announced a new system in which people could have the same gamertag with a randomly generate numerical suffix.

My question is this: With the new GT system, does Microsoft still delete accounts after a certain period of inactivity? If so, how long is the period?

it may seem available but it may be the gamertag of an inactive account. The new gamertag system that is being implemented allows you to have a similar gamertag to the one you want .

Hello, I also wondered about this question cuz there is a gamertag that I want which is my nickname and come to find out that its has already been taken. I contacted support and they told me can be anywhere from 6 months to 2 years for the gamertag to
be available to use. But when I checked again after a couple years it was still active.

Where did they said this? It took them like 10 years to start resetting GT's from the Xbox and haven't heard anything about it since. This was back in the 360 days.
