    Inactive account


    So the GT 'Stormbot' is taken, which I wouldn't be too confused or annoyed by, if it weren't for the fact that this account hasn't been touched for 10 years. It has played a grand total of 6 games and has 175 gamerscore. I don't know why
    it hasn't been released yet, so I figured I'd ask. Anyways, it will likely continue to sit there gathering dust, but I figured I'd point it out.

    Do you think Microsoft will clear out old unused gamertags?

    They actually do this but its not live gamertags as much as Microsoft accounts goes inactive for x period they will purge it

    When does Microsoft deem an account inactive long enough to warrant that "purge" of inactive gamer tags?

    The gamertag system is in use on other Microsoft services as well. So even if it's not being used on an Xbox, it may be in use somewhere else. If the person who owns it doesn't sign in for 5 years (starting last year) the gamertag will be released.

    Adding to this, just because it is inactive on Xbox, does not mean that the Microsoft account is inactive. As long as they keep using the account, then the gamertag will stay attached.

    An account has to be inactive for two years now, before the account is closed.

    If the tag belongs to an inactive account would it not be available for lookup? Could that be why I'm having this issue? Also, if the account is inactive is there anyway for me to get the tag? Also, is there a way to search for inactive gamertags like
    mine possibly is?

    When will Xbox release inactive account gamertags out again?

    in 2016 they announced that inactive accounts will be removed if they didn't been active for 5 years. So that means inactive accounts will be deleted in 2021

    The basic answer is no.

    The next roll off of inactive accounts will be in 2021 I believe, and the account will have to have been inactive 5 years.
