    Inactive Account has a Gamertag I Want to Use


    So my name on twitch is and has been for awhile so I tried to make my gamertag but its taken by an inactive account with 0 gamerscore. Not sure if there is anything I could do about it especially with covid-19 going on and some things
    being restricted. Is there a way microsoft could change the gamertag of that account because of it being inactive?

    It has been some time before they did a clean up but since the new Gamertag system has been released I don't think it will happen anytime soon

    I waiting for a specific gamer tag for 8 years now :) Microsoft is releasing them sporadically, no way to know when.
    They don't release unused gamertags sporadically anymore.

    As 2 people have already posted,if a gamertag/account doesn't sign in to any Microsoft service for 2 years then it is freed up.This rule came in after the final mass release in 2016 when they said a tag would be released if it didn't sign in for 5 years
    but in August 2019 they changed it to 2 years.

    The earliest any inactive tag would be released is August 2021.

    If a tag you have been waiting for is not available then it is in use somewhere on Microsofts services (not just xbox live) or possibly got banned at some point.

    You have to wait, after 2 years of account inactivity the gamertag should be avaiable again

    try changing the gamer tag on the old account then you should be able to use that gamer tag on your new account.
