Pre paid codes can be added to extend a gold sub,free trials can't. A free trial isn't a pre paid code.

Was it a gold trial, or a full gold code?

If it was only a 2 day or 14 day gold trial, you can not get the free games.

In order to play Gears online you need to have a gold account. Sometimes the games come with a free gold trial with a code to enter. You could enter that and play online for the length of the trial to see what it is like, but ultimately you need a gold account
to play with others online.

Since you said you were a noob I just thought I would add if you get your hands on a Gold Trial code you can enter it by pressing the guide button, scrolling over to "Games & Apps" tap, and then scroll down to "Redeem Code". Just enter the code and your
trial will be active.

Only one Xbox Live Gold free trial can be used/redeemed used under the same account. I just want to clarify, are you able to sign in and download your profile, and access the multiplayer feature of your online games? If you can, then that means that you
already have the free trial. You will need to wait until the free trial expires before you can avail another free trial (code), or allow the same free trial to renew (if the free trial was subscribed from xbox.com).
