Improve ping / latency

Let us work together to document things that can improve latency. With the Xbox network test we can see our ping to the same server every time. This will provide a standard for comparison. Let's say I normally see a ping of 64ms then I change something
like a new router or different ISP but I stay at the same house and after the change I see a ping of 54 ms. If that happened you might want to know what I did to see if it works for you too right. I'm in the process of upgrading from residential to business
class Internet and I also have the new Asus RT88u on the way. I live in Illinois and currently I have Xfinity 75/10 Mbps. I have a Motorolla Surfboard SB6183 modem and a Netgear R7000 Nighthawk router. I connect with cat6 cables. I normally check my ping daily
and almost always see 64 - 65 ms. Although last night I saw 79 ms but there were some Xbox issues. But even after all services were back online the ping was still 79 ms. I expect that it will return to 64 ms today though. I'm curious to see if these costly
upgrades will make a difference and you might be too. I will post again in about a week with results. I would also like to know if anyone else has tested anything like third party router firmware. On an older router a few years ago I tried DD WRT and saw a
decrease in my ping of about 5 ms but then a few days later I had issues and ended up going back to stock firmware.

Latency/Ping issues.

Anyone know what causes high latency/ping and know of any ways to improve it? I cannot play online because it causes lagg. It's not even peak time currently.

What's your latency?

its because network settings pings a server in america, your latency is much lower than that

 

Also I'm no networking IT guy so if this idea is flawed please let me know. I have heard of another way to check speeds on the Xbox at
SpeedOf.Me, Internet speed test for all your devices but I haven't tried it yet.

Another note about my current Internet is that I do have IPv6 and I use googles DNS servers for both IPv6 and IPv4.

 

With the new router and business internet I still see pings of 64 ms. During peak times it does seem a little better than before when playing online. Could be the business Internet but I'm not sure. All in all I am satisfied with the new setup, definitely
seems more consistent. Too bad I can't get fiber Internet.
