Ignorance, misinformation, and a quote from Old Abe

I remember watching E3 and it put me off buying the XBone, however after many changes and the fact that MS admitted they got a lot of things wrong, a few weeks ago I finally went out and bought it.

Yes the new "Dash" is a mess, I don't like it at all. But as with the 360, I'm sure it will evolve over time. My biggest complaint though is the controller, it's no where near as good as the 360's. Biggest problem is when playing Forza 5, there is no feeling
to it. I know some of my friends feel the same way as I do when on Forza. Hopefully a new licensed version will be released, if there isn't one already.

I believe this is something you will never see on the Xbox One.

Why?

Piracy.

Opening the console up to being able to play unsigned code just gives the modders and pirates a way into the system that they've never had before.

 

A bold promise indeed, but I'm confident that even with Phil in charge they will still be looking to put it in houses not necessarily owned by gamers. If you look at the process by which people own consoles now, it's getting more wide spread. Who owned a
Gamecube? Mostly kids, and their friends right? There wasn't a lot there for adults who hadn't gamed before. Then the Xbox came out. That spread a little wider, to older kids because of the M rated games. Then who owned an Xbox 360? Dads, Granddads, Husbands,
Teens, and Kids. People bought Xbox 360's for their Multimedia as well as games. Apps, streaming... it aimed a little farther. I think Microsoft have looked at that, and said, right, at this rate in the next few years everyone will be a potential consumer.
Not gamers, not Movie lovers, everyone. How are we gonna make this happen?

It's a theory of course, but it makes sense to me. I've become very aware of who owns game consoles now, and certainly has a wider audience than when I was a kid.

 

Here is the problem though, why would non-games want a One over the myriad of other media
devices out there, including Microsoft's own Xbox 360 and Sony's PS3.

The 360 is a fantastic media device, both for streaming from my PC and for the apps now that they are outside of the Gold subscription.

Why would people pay for a One when, blu-ray aside, the Xbox 360 is a far more capable media device. Go with the PS3 and you get a console that has blu-ray and is a far more capable media device than the Xbox One.

Both at prices far cheaper, even including a Kinect for voice control on the 360, than what you can buy an Xbox One for.

Honestly I think Microsoft have an uphill battle to sell the One as a media device to non-gamers given how limited it is in that regard at the moment, and at its current price point.

 

I hear you HEROxTriaScopic. One of Xbox's quotes that I loved was we are trying to get out of the basements and into the living rooms. And while that can be interpreted as an insult, I took it quite the opposite. I am tired of the "Gamer" stereotype.

I have actually been trying to remove the word "playing" out of my vocabulary when I speak of Xbox and well...Games. Because this is an art now. And what we do, is "Interactive Entertainment". And I am being entertained by these masterpieces (well, most
of them). Not playing.

 

Well it will still offer games, it would just be overall a system for the house, not just for the swearing 14 year old on the second floor.

That's a contradiction though, because if they understood the market "just fine", they wouldn't have overestimated how attractive an all in one system was to the more hardcore gamers buying the system at launch. They marketed an all in one system with TV
functionality, when in reality it's a poor all in one system (even now - it was worse at launch), and the OneGuide required to use the TV stuff properly was only available in America for a long time.

I disagree, because at E3 earlier this year Sony started to talk about media content and they've said that media streaming and MP3 support and stuff are coming to the system in early 2015. What they did is prioritise gaming first, not make a machine that
will only ever play games.

Then why say it in the first place? Why, when that MS employee said "those plans are scrapped now" recently, did they issue a statement saying that he misspoke? They're still making the same old mistakes. They need to communicate with developers and users
in plain English and let them know what's going on. If it's been scrapped, say so. If they're still working on it, say so.

Outside of the corporate space, MS are having more misses than hits cos they never quite nail what the market wants. Either that or they're too late to market. Windows Phone for example, which is excellent, but arrived too late against Android and iOS to
really make a huge dent. The vast majority of Windows Phone sales come from low end devices as a result. The Xbox 360 is one thing they really got right, although it took a couple of iterations to get that right and it was only really when the Xbox 360 S came
out that they nailed it.

I think they're going to continue to struggle against Sony, as the PS4 is in the position the 360 was in last gen, only with Sony having a bigger catalogue of studios making exclusives. The UK and America were the main markets that meant MS and Sony sold
a similar amount of consoles last gen, as mainland Europe and Japan were basically Sony Land while the US and UK were MS Land, but they're being outsold in the UK and America now too.

 

The PS4 is being powered by it's fan boys right now, and nothing more. I've seen them, and I've played on one several times. They are not better by any means. Better graphics? Where? Very hard to spot the difference. Sony have coasted on doing everything
contrary to what Microsoft did in their reveal. That tracks ends eventually, you wait.

 

Despite their markets SigmaTheDJ Xbox 360 still hit 80+ million console sales last October, PS3 in November (yes, there was 10 month gap) and is still selling great for 8 years in. So 80+ Million, in a smaller market is impressive. It is only a matter
of time before the Xbox One picks up selling pace. It is inevitable.

That's not true though. 31% of PS4 owners have never owned a Playstation before. 17% of PS4 owners didn't buy a console at all last gen. There are lots of people who switched from 360 to PS4, for the exact same reason that lots of people switched from PS2
to 360.

As for a pick-up in sales being "inevitable", I don't really know what that's based on. The Xbox One is not the Xbox 360. It's more expensive than the competition, yet weaker and with fewer games. The PS4 now has the party mode, cross-game chat and most
of the things that made Live far better than PSN last gen.

 

You are discounting those who buy consoles and then become fanboys.

 

On the original post, I say it's a bit of everything, but I have always said the following,

Microsoft did not get the message across about what their vision was, and add to that the stupid comments like (we have a device for people with limited or no connectivity, it's called an Xbox 360)

That line alone must have sent thousands away, then they insist on Kinect, now, I will admit, Kinect 2 IS better than the first, but, where's the killer game for it, the must have title, they expected gamers to buy into something that they either did not
want, like or need, Xbox One is getting better, but there's so much that's missing,

Themes, gamer pics, not able to stream from my laptop because I do not have the right windows package, I cannot play custom soundtracks in Forza, I have been able to do that since the original Xbox, but I cannot with the One,

There's loads more, but I don't need to type it, you all know what we want, we ask for it everyday, Original Xbox awesome, Xbox 360 could do everything the Xbox could, but so much more, Xbox One, can do lots more than the Xbox 360, but so much is left out

I would love to know why.

 

What "we" want ?.....

I just want games (and already fine with what i got),the rest (features,apps) are bonuses......

I never ask (or hope) for a Xbox 360 replica.....
