Wide Area Cross-Platform Multiplayer between Xbox One and Xbox One X?

Alright, so I've heard people talk about how you can play between Windows 10 and the Xbox One X. I've heard about how you can play Xbox One games with the Xbox One X with backwards compatibility. I've heard about how you can "system link" play locally between
all three generations of the Xbox. I've heard so many things surrounding this one question without actually answering the question and I'm really surprised that nobody has asked this yet...

"Can someone who is playing on an Xbox One X, play an Xbox One game in wide area multiplayer with someone who has an Xbox One?"

For example, let's say I wanted to play my old XB1 copy of Ghost Recon Wildlands with my buddies. If I put that disc into an Xbox One X console, and click "Multiplayer" and my buddy has an Xbox One (without the X) and he lives six states away, would we be able
to connect up and play Wildlands using that setup?

It really depends on the person who has the Xbox One S. If they want to play with you, they can, but if they don't then you can't play with them. It's really that simple.

Yes you can! The Xbox One and Xbox One S are in the same family of devices, meaning you can play Xbox One with anyone on either console. This will be the same with Xbox Scorpio when it comes out.

You have names mixed up. There are no consoles named the Xbox One Series S or Xbox One Series X.

The Xbox One/One S/One X all have a disc drive.

The Xbox One S All Digital Edition does not have a disc drive.

The Xbox Series X has a disc drive.

The Xbox Series S does not have a disc drive.

All the consoles can play backward compatible games. The Series S and One S all digital edition can only play games digitally downloaded.

The other consoles can play games from disc and from digitally downloaded,
