If I have the same XBox One game saved to multiple external drives, how can I tell which...

    Hi all,

This may seem like a weird question, but let me explain: I split my time between two physical locations (houses) and have an XBox One console at each. I also have a 5TB external HDD on which I store all of my games; this way I can just bring the drive back
and forth between houses and have instant access to everything. While this works great, I've been toying with the idea of getting an SSD drive to decrease loading times on my main console, but because of their higher prices I would only be able to afford a
small (256GB) SSD drive which wouldn't even come close to holding my entire game library. Therefore, I plan to copy only the games that I play most often and/or have the longest load times (Destiny, Forza, etc) to the SSD. The problem is, I don't want to have
to bring TWO drives with me every time, so I would want those games to be stored on BOTH drives so that I could still have access to them when I only grab my 5TB drive. Is there any way to specify from which drive a game will load? Because if my XBox is just
going to load the game from the slower 5TB HDD even when the SSD is plugged in then there's really no point in getting the SSD (unless I want to keep plugging/unplugging different drives, which I definitely DON'T want to do).

TL;DR: if I have a XBox One game copied to both an external HDD and an external SSD, is there any way to specify from which drive the game will load (without having to unplug one or the other)?

    Thanks everyone!

    :)

    Hi

Don't be fooled into buying an external SSD, most are far too expensive for what they are. I'm not saying not to buy an SSD though.

The cheapest option is to make your own. All you need is a standard 2.5" SSD and an external USB 3.0 drive enclosure. SSD's on their own work out a lot cheaper and a Drive enclosure costs only $10. External SSD use the same tech, just in a glued together
    case.

It's not complicated either. Putting an SSD hard drive in an enclosure is as easy as changing batteries in a TV remote.

My external SSD is a 2.5" Corsair MX500 SSD drive.

if i'm not mistaken the game run from last known location so if it was last run on HDD and you add the SSD without unplugging the HDD it will most likely run from the HDD

edit: so you can copy to the SSD unplug the HDD start the game then plug the HDD back and it should run from SSD in the future

and if it does not work properly you can always simply just move the game (removing it from HDD) instead of copying

My goodness, don't I feel stupid! Frathos, that is exactly the type of functionality I was looking for, thank you! I use the drive/location Filter in [My Games & Apps] all the time since my new games keep auto-installing to the internal drive of my "Home"
XBox whenever the external drive is plugged into the other (non-Home) console and I need to move them over, so I'm well versed in its use. Can't believe I didn't think of this myself, but am very grateful for your fresh perspective. Thanks again!

    You are welcome...glad to help!

If you play PUBG...that's definitely one game that benefits from being installed and run on an SSD instead of the internal or an external USB HDD.

    Happy gaming!

If I have the same XBox One game saved to multiple external drives, how can I tell which drive is being used?

If you have a game installed on more than one drive (eg to have a backup copy) and both drives are connected at the same time, what you can do is go into My Games & Apps and then select the drive you want to use in the Filter options. That should show you
the game on the drive you want to use, press A on it to start from that location.

It helps if you name your drives differently to help identify them (eg. XO-HDD-5TB-1, XO-SSD-1, or whatever unique names suit your fancy). I use the type and number scheme for my HDD/SDD drives.

    Good luck!
