I understand that a xbox game pass 14 days trial code or a xbox live gold 14 days trial code can't be used/sold as xbox game pass ultimate 14 days trial code for sure.

Because a 'xbox games pass ultimate 14 days trial code' equals a 'xbox game pass 14 days trial code + xbox live gold 14 days trial code', so for new Microsoft/Xbox accounts, a 'xbox game pass ultimate 14 days trial codes' could be used/sold as 'xbox game
pass 14 days trial code' or 'xbox gold live 14 days trial code' , right?

However, what you could do is gift to your son a Game Pass Ultimate code, and during the redemption process, the system will inform you that Core will be converted to Ultimate as well.

“Buying Xbox Game Pass Ultimate automatically upgrades your existing Xbox Game Pass subscriptions to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.”

Here's what I believe happened.

You had Ultimate, you added 6 months of Gold to it and it converted that to 3 - 4 months of Game Pass Ultimate. That conversion also cancelled your Gold. Which means when the Ultimate ran out, both Gold and Game Pass Ultimate ran out as well. So when you added the 14 day trial game pass to it, it did nothing as it is a trial subscription, it just gave you the 14 days Game Pass value you redeemed. If you don't understand it, please let me know
