I'd like to change my Gamertag. The one I want to change to has been unused since the early Xbox 360 days. He has very minimal achievements and only downloaded free games. I strongly believe it was a trial account. What are the chances of getting this released?

Taken Gamertags

I want to change my gamertag, and have come up with a few thing I want to change it to, unfortunately these are taken, one is an inactive Zune account and the other is an inactive existing Xbox GT. I heard somewhere that Microsoft free up unused accounts
every so often, any idea when this will next be? It's just annoying that the gamertags I want are taken but not being used.

LOCKED - Acquiring a seemingly unused gamertag

If I find a gamertag that seems to be unused... for example this one:

Sign in to your Microsoft account

Is there some way I could contact MS and have them release that tag or change my tag to that tag? That's not the one I want but an example of a tag that seems to be unused.

The owner of the account would need to change it to something else, or you'll have to wait for Microsoft to release it (there is no exact timetable). Otherwise, there is no way to get the tag. The gamertag system is in use on other Microsoft services. So
even if it isn't being used on an Xbox, it can be in use elsewhere.

With the new system it will definitely be faster if not almost instant (24-48hrs most likely) for an unused gamertag that once changed to something else (thus making it unused) to be free for the community pickings once more. The new gamertag update was
supposed to allow for all players to have the gamertag they wanted no matter how common or uncommon it may be, with it also brought changes to most likely the systems of how gamertags are viewed in Xbox's system as a whole. You should still take that with
a grain of salt though, as instant may not necessarily be true but it definitely won't be years down the line when you can use that gamertag again... I'd think more like days or weeks at the latest.

I am in agreement with @Kivoids The gamertag you are wanting to change to is probably already taken. My advice would be to choose one of the suggested names XBOX gives you when the one you want is taken or change the letters in your gamertag to numbers,

Hello Slay My Soul! The only way to change your gamertags is to Pay the 800 MS Points for each to change them. If you are wanting your old gamertag you are first going to have to pay to change the old one to be able to use that name for the new one as you
arent able to have two accounts at the same time with the same name spelled the exact same way. Remember if your having problems recovering your old Gamertag, if it has been a long time since you used your old account and it sat for a long time without a Gold
subscription, it was more than likely reset when Microsoft reset old banned and unused gamertags last year and it was probably taken by someone else. If that is the case than you will be unable to use that name.
