I Wonder How Big A 4K Digital Game Download Will Be On The Scorpio?

Title says it all.

I don't even want to think about game updates. lol

Will we see threads like "There's a 100 GB update on day one of (insert any game name here)"

Maybe they'll chop games up like Quantum Break did and have you opt to stream some of the content?

I wonder how things would have turned out if Sony had followed through on plans for the PS4 to be Digital Download only?

 

they will use advances in compression algorithms to limit the size of the download, they can pack large amounts of data into a small package at the moment, but on the xbox the files that are downloaded are already unpacked so installation is near instant
once downloaded but the drawback is the huge file sizes, if they packed everything and unpack locally once downloaded the downloads would be very small but you would have to wait for fie verification, installation and playing the game while downloading would
not exist on some games.

I have seen some programs that can compress large files impressively.

Approx 40GB of data compressed down to 11.9GB but the downside is that it can take approx 1 hour to unpack and verify the data.

 

also on another note, just take a look at the pc games that support 4k that will give you an idea of space requirements.

 

I know several complained about a 15GB day one update for Halo MCC. OMG Forza 5 is like 35GB big. That Quantum Break cutscenes was like 75GB big and it's 1080p. 4k is probably like 3x better than 1080p? If that's so, expect it to be up to 3x bigger than
what we're being shoved down our throats with on Xbox 1. Xbox 360 updates and DLC and download content file sizes were much more storage space friendlier. It stresses the need for Microsoft to use SSD's rather than antiquated incredibly slow 5400rpm and 7200rpm
HDD's, or to have removable storage options which Xbox 360 and PS4 have, or relying on "external storage devices" which take up additional space in conjunction with the console. Or maybe they can compress file sizes.

I got this info off a major authorized retailer in NZ regarding 4k HDTV's:

"Samsung 4K UHD delivers 4K content at 4X the resolution of Full HD TV. The detail and clarity of the images will astonish."

So 4k from that statement, has 4x the resolution of 1080p. So be prepared for updates which are 4x bigger than 1080p or what we're use to with our original Xbox 1 consoles. I'd say updates/DLC/game sizes, for Xbox 1 right now, are already like 4x bigger
than what we're use to from Xbox 360. Then there's a question if Xbox Scorpio's hardware will be good enough to run all games in 4k 30fps+ when a custom desktop PC with high end hardware and much better specs will be able to handle that task much more easily.

 

If I wanted to stream stuff in 4k, I'd prefer Netflix servers. Whenever I try to watch Xbox ad videos on the dashboard (sometimes Microsoft makes those ads, or game developers advertise their own ads), whenever I watch videos on the dash including DVR clips,
there is considerable lag and buffering. My ISP is Vodafone NZ and get 100mb/s down and 10mb/s upload speed. But when I watch Netflix, OMG Netflix servers are so much better at streaming HD movies for me to watch. I'm 60 minutes into watching an HD movie on
Netflix on my Xbox 360 or Xbox 1 console, and there's been NO BUFFERING. Others on Xbox also comment how it takes like 2 hours to download a 2GB file off Xbox Live when it takes like a minute to download a file off the net on their PC. I don't think the Xbox
Live servers are ready to cope with 4k downloading from millions of Xbox users. Cuz THAT is going to be A LOT of numbers.

 

To give you an idea, the new Blu-ray discs can supposedly hold up to 1 TB of data.

Expect huge downloads. I hope no one has to deal with data caps from their ISP.

 

To the person think that bigger file size is force in our mouth hole. It is not. Because it thee nature of how Higher res files are. They take more data then lower res file. The only way I can see it be lower without compression is have default res at
720P And it will upscale to 4k.

I'm kinda thinking the same.

I've seen some in this forum say it takes them a week to download a game sometimes.

I think those with kwappy (with a k) internet may wanna just stick with disc, although they'll still probably have to download huge updates.

 

I am actually curious how this will effect the regular x1 and x1s when it comes to games if all of the games are compatible with every version.

 

it will most likely detect which xbox version you have and download the amount needed, same as disc, it will detect which xbox you are using and install the needed files only.

 

Generally I think if a patch is huge it will be replacing a lot of stuff or adding some things. Not just fixing it. It really does depend. If you are writing some fixes that use assets that are in place you could get away with smaller downloads. Seems
there is a lot of stuff being replaced/added in these very large patches. Then again that is the nature of patches. Easier to fix this stuff before you ship it out. Once you do you may not be able to "patch". You may have to actually fix the code and send
the whole thing to replace what is there. This is a much bigger sized patch.

I was working on a "patch" once on a piece of software. Had to literally replace everything. The coding was almost the same but still have to be replaced. Subsequent patches would have been easier and a lot less data intensive for the user. Honestly,
the first fix that was sent to the user should have been done in-house and not after the thing was sent. Plus, it can be very hard to fix certain things once the software is in the wild.

I do expect initial downloads of digital to get larger. Depends on game size as to how much. They may, probably will, implement some compression as well.

 

I would hope that the Scorpio would have a pretty massive hard drive like 5tb+ maybe?

I'm also curious how the games will work or if some games will be "Scorpio Only" or something.
