I wi-fi but I am able to connect to an open wifi with no password requirements

The message prompt that you're getting is related to the router settings, Rick.

According to Xbox support:

"Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is what your Xbox uses to set up your router for multiplayer gaming and chat. If you see “UPnP Not Successful” in your console’s Network settings, first see if your router needs an update."

Do you have access to the router settings? Because if yes, you may need to manage it. Here are the steps:

"1. Sign in to your router’s setup webpage, and make sure the router’s UPnP setting is turned on. You can usually find first-time help with this in the router manual or on the manufacturer’s support site.

2. Turn the UPnP setting off and save your changes.

3. Restart your console, your modem, and your router.

4. Turn the UPnP setting back on and save your changes. If there’s a Zero Config setting, make sure that’s turned on as well.

5. Restart your modem and router."

If you are attempting to connect to wi-fi, you need the password for that wi-fi. If you are trying to connect to wi-fi that is not password protected, you need to have access to the modem itself, as you need to reset the modem or the xbox will not recognize
it.

Wi-Fi signal strength, your Xbox may not be receiving a strong enough Wi-Fi signal to connect to your network. Try moving your Xbox closer to your Wi-Fi router, or consider adding a Wi-Fi extender or repeater to boost your Wi-Fi signal.

Network ID and Password, make sure that you are entering the correct network ID (SSID) and password for your Wi-Fi network. Double-check to ensure that you are not mistyping any characters or accidentally using capital letters when they are not required.

At the back of your router there's a tiny hole you can press using a ball pen for 5 sec to factory reset it. Please note that after a factory reset, you will have to connect to your network using the default Wi-Fi SSID or name and Wi-Fi password indicated at the back of your router or manual.

Yes, Wi-Fi has to deal with software but it's a hardware just like bluetooth. A device won't be able to support Wi-Fi if there's no hardware for Wi-Fi or wireless connectivity or let's simply put it as a wireless card.
