I was curious if I could switch a Xbox account to a different Microsoft account

Microsoft account and Xbox account are one and the same. Unfortunately, there are no tools to separate or switch an Xbox account from a Microsoft account.

No.

I assume you mean adding a secondary email alias. If so all that does is allow them to login with a different secondary email but it still uses the same password because its ultimately still the same account.

So if you change the password it will log that family member out and they would have to still sign in using the new password.

Long story short there is no way to seperate your twos access without one of you starting over with a new account.

Adding a new email address/alias as a secondary on his Xbox account is only for sign in preferences and this will not transfer any saved data progress or files from one account to another.

I would suggest not to remove the original primary email address on your family member's account as this will permanently delete all of the files and saved data progresses on his Xbox account.
