I want to refund a different version of the game I bought.

So, you bought the Standard Edition of the game, played it for a while (I am guessing you bought it longer ago than 2 weeks?) then decided you wanted the 75th Anniversary Edition (only other version i can see)?

I'm not sure why the chat person would have recommended that course of action as I can't imagine a circumstance where they were ever going to refund the basic version given you've played it for some time...unless they didn't realise you'd been playing it for a while. Game refunds are only given if the refund process is done within 2 weeks of purchase, unless they are special circumstances...wanting to return a game you have played simply because you want to buy a different version is not a special circumstance.

I bought the wrong version. I wanted the Java version but bought the Windows 10 version. Can I get a refund in any way? I'm never going to play the Windows 10 version.

You usually can't purchase a digital game twice on your account, unless your manage to buy two different versions (e.g. the standard game, and later a Game of the Year version).

If you bought the game on disc, be aware that if your console is connected online, the disc is the very same version of the download game. So if the download version glitches, the newly bought version will glitch, too.

As the others already said, you can't refund a game you owned over a year already.

You might try to
use the refund form to get a refund for the newly bought game, and explain that you erroneously purchased the same version of the game twice, trying to get the new purchase refunded.
