I want to change my gamertag for free

I want to change my gamertag and
http://support.xbox.com/en-US/my-account/manage-gamertag-and-profile/change-xbox-live-gamertag instructs me to sign in at live.xbox.com which says I can change it once for free within 30 days of creating it. It has only been about 2 weeks. The page then
forces me to sign on the console to change it and then is asking $9.99 for the change. What’s up with the contradiction?

Were you given a random gamertag when you signed up or did you choose your gamertag?

 

yeah the free tag change is for accounts that the system created the tag for you

 

Thanks for the info. I chose the tag when I signed up for xblg mid February. I'll just have to fork over the $9.99 I suppose. It just seems it could be made more clear on the mentioned support page. quote from their page -- Within 30 days of creating your

If I'm hearing you correctly, roadkill1910, the web page is just a pack of lies? I've been in contact with Microsoft but they are dragging their feet so I'll soon be beyond the 30 days for free offer which so far seems to have other conditions not laid out
on the page.

 

they aren't dragging their feet you need to read the full conditions of the terms

first of all the full article says you only get to change your name once if you were given a randomly generated name

not one that you choose

once you choose you already used the free name change

 

and only within the first 30days

once you choose a name yourself you don't have an option to change and this is for only new accounts

More questions... If I change my gamertag does it cancel out anything the old gamertag has accomplished? I've not played anything online yet, just COD Ghosts campaign - which I just completed. As practice would you guys suggest trying it again on a higher
difficulty level? I'm new to this so still getting used to the awkward feel of the controller. My biggest weakness seems to be getting killed by grenades! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If your gamertag was created for you during Xbox Live sign-up, you can change the gamertag once for free. Additional Xbox Live gamertag changes cost 800 Microsoft Points. For steps and details, see Change
your Xbox Live gamertag or Xbox Music tag.

Since you chose your gamertag, you would have to pay to change your tag. Changing your gamertag should not affect anything else on your account.
