I want a gamertag that is taken by a inactive player

Thank you for posting here on the Xbox forums. Unfortunately, there is no way to claim a gamertag that is currently on an "inactive" account. Microsoft

did release nearly one million gamertags back in 2016, but there's no telling when they will decide to do that again. If an account goes 5 years without signing into anything at all, that gamertag may be released. However, there will be no notification.
You would just have to hope that what you want is available.

MS new policy Starting I believe right after the last time they freed up a bunch of gamertags about 2 years ago was to start freeing up gamertags that are inactive after 5 years and that 5 years started from the new implementation of the policy.

Keep this in mind this means that the account that the gamertag is attached to can not be signed into ANYTHING to do with MS so if the account is attached to a windows 10 computer, an office subscription or anything else besides xbox to do with MS then that
counts as being active.

The only way to getthe name is if the original owner changes it to something else or if they do not sign into the account for 5 years (starting in 2016). The gamertag system is in use on other Microsoft services, so even if it is not in use on an Xbox,
it may be in use somewhere else.

I'll also add, not all gamertags are released for various reasons. Naglfar may never be released, not only is it a mythological boat made from finger and toe nails of the dead, it is also the name used by a band since 1992 and could have restrictions
placed on its use.

Unfortunately Microsoft probably won't release the gamer tag.
