i thought gaming online free??

so anyone have this issue, i am able to online multiplayer w/o xbox live for months free of charge. then some days im unable to play period. wtf is going on. i know online is free, so why does it do this. i dont break any violations.

You can blame Broad casting for this!!! I never thought people would have more fun watching someone else play a video game until I witnessed my younger brothers doing it. Then what makes things worse is everyone that watched that one person play tries
to copy exactly what that person they watched play does. SMH gaming has gone far far far down hill.

 

Playing online is not free, except for maybe a small handful of games. The other 99.9% require an active gold subscription.

Actually, being able to do online multi-player gaming is a paid subscription service (Live gold). The are free weekends and even trial periods if you have codes.

If you're on an Xbox One and a gold subscriber has the console as their home console, the subscription is shared with all users on that console until the user changes consoles.

Could that be why you were able to play online without issues?

 

I would also suggest checking
https://account.microsoft.com/services to confirm if you have an active subscription, or at least figure out what's been paying for your Gold service the whole time.

Xbox Live Gold is not free, other than the promotional free weekends/trials as Mistress Sara has mentioned.

Gold-sharing is another possiblity too, if you're using somebody else's console and
they pay for Gold on their own account.

I wouldn't worry about any accidental violations. If you didn't have Gold (or shared Gold access), you wouldn't be playing online. Simple as that.
