Maybe a lot of developers know they can rush out a game, gamers ( and I include myself ) will still rush out and buy it day one, then any final touches, bug fixes, extra content can be released by the way of updates, DLC ( paid for or not ) ??

  2. ^ I would agree to an extent with that, and add.

500 GB INTERNAL HDD with Kinect. They then removing the Kinect so that the X1 could chew gum while walking. "Time Slice" I think they called it.

Next, if memory serves. You got EXTERNAL HDD Support, because I FEEL that they knew the X1 would need a tone of HDD space to hold all those games/apps/updates.

Reason I say ^ is because the 20 GB Xbox 360, went from ? HDD Space - 500 GB and you HAD to pay dearly to go from 20 - 60 then more $ to go from 60 - 120 - 250 - 500 GB and so on, and so forth over the years. Yet with the X1 it was almost overnight that
they allowed External HDD support for even more than 1 External HDD.

  3. I'm not a programmer or a developer, but I believe I can give you a plausible explanation.

Some updates on the Xbox One are huge because the update doesn't just contain 'game code' they also contain texture and geometry data. Let me explain. Texture data for the latest games on all the current generation systems is the main reason why
most games are now coming in at 30-40GB instead of 6-7GB on the Xbox 360.

This is the very reason GTV on the Xbox One weighs in at 43GB and the 360 version weighs in at around 16GB. The Xbox One's textures are bigger and more defined, hence the increase in data size.

Due to Microsoft's marketing and design of the 360, not all 360 consoles come with a hard drive. Therefore most, developers are forced to optimise their software before release. They can instruct the game on how to optimise its performance with
small updates, but in most cases can't provide new texture data.

These updates are big, because in many cases, they are there to improve performance and stability, the best way to do that is by optimising the game textures and the engine. Current generation games are big, hence the bigger updates, get it?

WHY do you care how big the update is?????

I am surprised what kind of issues people come up with.

What does the size matter as long as it does the job?

Are you running out of storage?

    Get a bigger one.

  5. Because not everyone has unlimited internet. Even here in the UK many people are stuck with download limits of 10 or 20gb. Fine for gaming and browsing but not so good when you have massive game updates.

  7. Hmm. Could it be a form of DRM?

I'll explain my hypothesis a bit.

It's well known now that a lot of "NEXT GEN" games are being released half baked. (Not exactly finished - Yes even some campaigns will not work right without an update, or two, or three, etc, etc, etc.)

Why? The only reason I can think of is DRM - which as everyone SHOULD remember - the console manufactures tried to incorporate before releasing their NEXT GEN systems, and was shot down by Sony when they said at E3. "This is the way you share a PS4 game."
And to a lesser extent US.

Now enter in the equation the Dev's - who R now releasing half baked games which essentially FORCES you to have your system connected to the net in order to be able to enjoy your purchases.

I think it is a fair point to be honest.

No matter the platform, game updates/patches seem to be growing out of proportion to the size of the games.

The unhappy truch is that nobody here really knows.

They can only offer their most educated (or in some cases "uneducated") guess.
