I have talked many times to the Rewards team about this issue, they always refer me to the Zendesk with Microsoft casual games team. My most recent time speaking with them was on the 13th of this month (April 2022) when my paid cash subscription ended and I used a gift card for the second time to extend and renew my subscription to Microsoft Solitaire Collection. It didn't show again as having been registered in the Microsoft system and so I contacted the rewards team immediately that same day. I began to realize that even though it showed my subscription as having ended at the rewards page, I was still able to sign in and still had my Premium status for Solitaire Collection. That is when I finally realized and deduced that the Gift card must have worked , even though there was ( and is) no indication of that other than my order history. Thank you for your question.

You cannot use the funds on your Microsoft Account to pay for an Xbox Live subscription. The only way to pay for a subscription is with a credit/debit card, or by redeeming a pre-paid subscription card (e.g., 12 months or 3 months cards, but not a currency
card).

Any subscription you buy on the console will automatically turn on Auto Renew. In order for that to work, there must be a credit card on the account it can charge when the account auto renews. Even though it is a free month, you must have a credit card
on the account to start the subscription.

When that free one month is finished it will renew into a paid 1 month subscription and charge the payment method you added.

Currency in the Microsoft Account can be used for purchasing games and content (add-ons for games, TV series, films and so on), but cannot be used for purchasing a Gold subscription.

To pay for Gold you need to either use PayPal or a credit card (for doing online) or purchase one of the pre-paid 3- or 12-month subscription cards, and then redeem the code you get with these.
