I'm sorry to hear that you can't change your Gamertag back. This may happen if you have changed your Gamertag more than once in the last 30 days, or if the Gamertag you want is already taken by another user. To check if the Gamertag you want is available, you can use this tool: https://social.xbox.com/changegamertag. If the Gamertag is available, you can try to change it again after 30 days from your last change. If the Gamertag is not available, you will need to choose a different one. I hope this helps.

The only time you can change it for free is after you sign-up and you want to change from the one already assigned to your account. After that, it is 800 Points to do so, unless your existing tag violates terms of service. Which doesn't appear to be the
case here.
