I need help switching my gamertag to another account.

I have a question that apparently the people at Microsoft can’t answer. I just want a straight answer… even if it’s not what I want to hear.

So I created my sons Xbox live account and gamer tag when he was young and had it attached to my email address (the one I use every day for everything). He is now almost 18 and is getting tired of it being attached to my email and
wants it attached to his email. However, his email address has a gamer tag already attached to it… although he has never used it and I think I accidentally created it messing around on the accounts (I’m not very computer savvy).

So my question, how do I switch his gamer tag to his own email address? Can it even be done? I have chatted with Microsoft, and spoken on the phone several times. But everyone seems to be reading from a manual and can’t comprehend
what I’m trying to do….
