I just got an xbox one X and the controller will not turn on the console, even when plugged in ...

I just upgraded to the one x from the original xbox one. I have no issues before with this except having to reconnect every once in a while. I have noticed that, with the one x, when I turn the system off, the controller won't always turn off and when
I try to use the controller to turn on the xbox, it will not turn on the xbox, even if I have the controller plugged directly into the console. Is there some new setting or something? What is going on? I should note that the controller does turn on and
the "X" button is steady, not blinking, but no response from the console.

Are all Xbox One Controllers going to be Wireless?

Yes, but also no.

Every Xbox One controller is wireless. However, when you plug it in via USB it becomes wired and sends the signal via wire instead of wireless (while also charging batteries, if you are using the charge-pack - or in the case of your question, it's using the power via cable instead of the batteries).

This is in contrast to how Xbox 360 controllers work. X360 has both wireless and wired. An X360 wireless controller when plugged in via USB is still sending the signal wireless, but is getting power via the USB. This is why you can't plug an Xbox 360 wireless controller via USB into your computer and have it work, because the controller is still sending a wireless signal.

This makes the Xbox One controllers great for both Xbox One and PC gaming, because you don't need to buy a 'wired' controller for it to work on the PC, you can just plug it in via USB and it'll send the signal via USB instead. I'm really glad Microsoft did this.

 

Xbox one controller dead after pressing update

I plugged my old Xbox one controller into my new Xbox one s and saw there was an available update. when i have pressed it my controller turned off and now wont turn back on even after changing batteries or plugging in via usb. any help?

It's not being synced to another console is it?

 

I just got it yesterday, this is the controller that came in the bundle.

 

I have no other console, but as I said, even when it is plugged in via USB, it is not working, which is the odd thing. As soon as I turn the xbox on, it will work fine. I should note that I did backup my setting from the xbox one via an external HD and
used that when I first set up the xbox. I tried with my other controller as well, which is an older one, and the same issue. I went through the troubleshooting steps and made sure my controller is up to date. Still no luck.

 

EDIT: You can see below I was having the same issue. A hard reboot of the console seems to have fixed it for me.

Having the EXACT same issue. Brand new Xbox One X straight out of the box received yesterday from Amazon as a Black Friday purchase. Never had problems with my original Xbox One or my Xbox One S in the other room.

I have also attempted to use the controller that came with my original Xbox One and it exhibits the same behavior. Will not turn on the console, does not turn off when the console turns off and the Xbox button lights up steady when attempting to turn on
the console. It has to be something with the console. It's not controller specific and it doesn't matter whether the controller is plugged in or unplugged.

 

That is odd, I got mine at Gamestop. This definitely seems like a console issue, not a controller issue....very unfortunate that you pay that much for a system that doesn't work out of the box

 

I JUST registered my serial number and found some "fishy" information.....My technical support states it will end on 4/6/2019 but says it is one year support, and my Manufacturer Warranty ends 01/06/2020, but say 2 years under it...these numbers do NOT
add up, me thinks Gamestop just gave me a returned console and claimed it was new.

 

I just spoke with Microsoft and was guaranteed this was a new console.....so, back to the drawing board. This is such an odd issue

Glad it worked for you too! Just doing a little troubleshooting with the two controllers and knowing my other consoles weren't doing it helped me determine it was something to do with the console. Nothing fixes computer issues like a good old fashioned
hard reboot. Definitely a strange problem to have straight out of the box.
