going gold right now is good with the free game promotions xbox live memberships stack for upto 3 years fyi

right now betweenjuly and xbox one launch you get 2games per month except for this month

right now fable 3 is free and assasins creed 2 and halo3 is free in jury

If you have an active gold membership for Xbox Live, then you are able to download free games with Gold for this month. You can also take advantage of the offers with Gold as well, and save money from games they have offered to you through the program.

For the Xbox 360 Games with Gold games, it depends if they are backwards compatible. You should be able to find this out, when you view the Xbox Games with Gold within the marketplace.
