I have to pay for Xbox Gold?

I have several friends who have an XBOX ONE, we're all trying to group up on a game called Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag. They explained to me how to connect with them through Gold and said it was free for 1 month only. But when I signed up and checked for
it, it showed that I had to pay for the membership at the start. Is there an explanation for this or is this just supposed to be a part of Xbox Gold?

It's free for one month if you sign up while creating your account or if you go through an ad that specifically gives you one month free. If you just joined Live without going through those methods, you would not receive the free trial.

 

But I just signed up so why didn't that come out?

 

Did you create your account and then sign up? The free trial is only given while you are creating your account.

 

What is the difference between those? I pressed 'Sign Up' on the main page of the Outlook website because my friends said they made their accounts that way.

 

If you created the account through a website, then you tried to get the trial after creating your account. In order to get the free trial, you have to create your account on the console and the free trial is offered while you are creating the account.
