Gaming Monitor on XBox One X

Probably could be because the refresh rate Hz, if its a gaming monitor should support more than 120Hz, the Xbox one X can handle 120Hz, chek the link i left here and you will find more info about it, if your monitor has Freesync this must solve the problem.
    I hope this can help

even though his screen is 165hz, does not mean it will work with Xbox series, the edid needs to have an entry that is dead on 120hz as an option to change too.

PC's can display on monitors with varying refresh rates as most monitors do not get precise refresh, they are usually like 143.889hz as an example of a 144hz monitor, the Xbox requires the edid to have an option for exact refresh of 120hz and anything under or above will not usually be available on the Xbox.

some 165hz monitors don't even have 120hz available in edid.

    Monitor with 120hz and VRR

I'm not too sure if the monitor supports it specifically with Xbox, but it does in general support it.

I'll look for a list of supported monitors but my previous search didn't show anything about 120hz with freesync over HDMI.

I think the issue is the Xbox isnt showing the refresh rate option until I change the override to HDMI and as soon as I do that the VRR setting is disabled whether I set the refresh rate to 60hz or 120hz.

    Xbox series X and Acer Nitro RG321QU 120hz 1440p

because that monitor supports set refresh rates at certain resolutions and 120hz is not one listed in the edid for that res, you can select that on pc as pc gpu's can deal with it, the xbox needs to have specific refresh rates listed in the edid and these have to be exact, most monitors only show 120hz as 119.98.

    Hello Mini,

Thanks for the update on the issue. IF you are not seeing the 120hz then most likely it isn't supported. As I see on the monitor it is a gaming monitor but talks about Freesync for higher refresh rate speeds which is not on the Xbox console unfortunately.
    That is on a PC.

On the page Javier posted it states all this on the bottom.

    Note

    • Your display must support 120Hz over HDMI. While some monitors support 120Hz over DisplayPort, they may not support it over HDMI.
    • 120Hz is only available for 1080p and 1440p. If you change your resolution to 4K UHD or 720p, the refresh rate will be set to 60Hz by default.
    • If your console is set for 4K UHD and you change your refresh rate to 120Hz, your resolution will be downgraded to the highest resolution available for your display

    Thanks,

    Brad

    Can't display 1440 / 120 (Series X)

    Hi,

Where is this list of monitors that have been 'Ok'd by MS'? Not that I don't believe you it's just that I haven't seen such a list, certainly not an official one.

The issue is one of 'timings'. A display maybe sold as 120Hz, but this refresh rate isn't exact, and Xbox consoles can be really picky when it comes to timings. For example if Series X (or S) is looking for a refresh of 119.98, but your screen actually refreshes at 119.88 then 120Hz will be unavailable for use.

The Xbox uses the VESA standard for refresh rates, if your display doesn't conform to this standard then high refresh and 1440P may not be possible.

To be clear, I'm not sure what the exact refresh of the MG278Q is, the above was an example for reference. The 144Hz rating is only available on a PC connected via Display Port.

It works at 120Hz on PC because PC graphics cards don't have to conform to VESA display standards. You'll probably get 120Hz all day on a PC but not so on a console. The manual won't explain this as generally speaking monitors are usually targeted and sold towards PC users. It's only at the launch of the latest generation that console users are picking monitors as their primary displays.

It's likely that 120Hz mode works at 1080P mode, so give that a try.
