I get that Live is having a problem but why can't I play offline?

I bought the games and downloaded them! How can I play offline when the system keeps telling me to go offline but when I do, it tells me I have to be online to play? Is local offline play not an option on the Xbox One anymore?

I've been having the same problem for a week or two now, and no one has been able to find a solution to the problem. I can get on live on my boyfriends xbox which is in the next room.

I'm using a wired connection so i don't understand why I'm having this problem. It worked fine, then suddenly cut out and now i can't play online

 

Trouble Logging In

The problem is still going on. While I'm a bit frustrated I can't do multiplayer because I can't sign on, I'm more angry at the fact that when I tried to play the Red Dead Undead game I've been meaning to catch up on, I couldn't. Why do I have to be on
live to play a single player game I've downloaded? That sucks. I understand that service being down is most likely necessary for some reason, but not having access to games I've previously downloaded seems like a problem that needs fixing!

We get that this is frustrating but Xbox is having troubles verifying that you own the game because you own a digital copy.

We just announced an outage for Purchase and Content usage. Please check our
Xbox
Live Status but we are also noticing that a number of users are having issues with signing into their accounts as well. We are currently looking into this.

I'd like to know the answer to the same question. I understand that currently when loading digital content it wants to validate it on our account. But when there is an outage like this, we can't play anything? That is brutal and infuriating.

I don't get a ton of time to play so I look forward to meeting up with friends online when I can. Both of them were on the game tonight and I couldn't join... that is very frustrating. Ok, I thought maybe I'll play some Red Dead Redemption 2 since I haven't
been able to put much time in there... couldn't play that either!!!! I spent too much of my night, resetting things hoping that I'll be able to join my friends online.

Why can't games that are played offline have some sort of validation that takes some time to expire. The next time the system is online, it can extend it. The hope is that if there is system trouble, do you have as many angry users because they can play
some things. I wouldn't have been writing this if I could have played something else.

I did not realize when I paid $50 to "download" a game from Xbox that I cannot play it offline unless I go online every time so Xbox can verify it. I don't play online but use my Live account for extras from the game developer. I don't think they
should control my use of the games. They Xbox system should be able to verify the copy and as you suggested, "validation that takes some time to expire. The next time the system is online, it can extend it".

Im guessing you do not have the console you are playing set as the home console for your account. When outages happen only your HOME console will be able to play your digital games

Along with what Viral said, if wanting to play offline go to network settings and select go offline. this lets Microsoft know you will be playing offline. Note there are some games you wont be able to play offline due to online content etc.

I didn't know about that setting, thank you. I went right away and checked, it is set to my home console. I only have one. I do plan on getting an Xbox One X soon so I'll have to check on that again.

I thought that would just happen automatically. I just tried playing Red Dead Redemption in offline mode and it worked. Thanks for the tip.

Naturally I'm still not happy with the outage especially when my friends can play and I can't join them. But I believe this will help and I appreciate the response.

This is no longer an immediate problem, as the services are now back up, but this simply did not work for me. I have an Xbox One X, my profile is the only profile on it, so game sharing is not an issue, and it was set as my home console, yet even switching
to offline mode did not let me play any game downloaded from the Xbox store - only games I have bought physically on disc. I would suggest that Microsoft look into this, quite urgently, and fix it, as it makes them look really rather incompetent running into
problems that aren't problems for just about every other store or service that exists which offers games for sale as downloads.

EDIT: And I should add that. even now, after double checking that my console is definitely set as my home console, turning on offline mode fails to let me play any downloaded game - each and every one requires that I be online.
