I don’t think my Microphone is working.

    Hi,

When I was gaming with my friends on my Series X, they couldn’t hear me even though I could hear them. I use the apple earphones which is connected to the headphone jack on my controller. I don’t know if I’m doing anything wrong.

If you can help me out, I’d greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    KK

    :)

I don’t think my Microphone is working.

    Hi,

There could be any number of possible reasons to this audio problem - multiple, various factors and causes to this. I’ll try to go through all the possible solutions which should at least pinpoint and identify exactly what’s causing this. Of course, feel welcome to skip any steps you’ve already tried, or if something doesn’t apply to you.

There’s currently known issues which are being addressed and worked on. Known Issues on Xbox Series X|S

There doesn’t currently appear to be any service outages affecting party chat on Xbox consoles - Xbox Live Status and @XboxSupport on Twitter. I recommend following the support page on Twitter for service updates and alerts.

Are your earphones connected to a wired or wireless Xbox controller? Is the Xbox controller an official and genuine Microsoft Xbox controller or a third party one? The Xbox One and Series X|S controllers are essentially the same (and both are compatible with each other), the Series X|S version is just slightly improved.

Does this error occur only when in a party? Try sending a voice message to a friend over Xbox Live and ask them if they were able to hear you.

If you’re part of the Xbox Insider program, it would be best to post here https://www.reddit.com/r/xboxinsiders/ for further help.

Restart your console. Be sure to wait at least 10-15 seconds before reconnecting the power to completely reset the power supply. Sometimes there’s just a random ‘glitch’ that can easily be fixed with a power cycle, soft resets help most of the time. Then disconnect and reconnect your earphones, making sure they’re securely connected to the controller. Always best to start with the simple solutions first :)

This support guide includes some of the steps I’ve mentioned here:

Troubleshoot audio problems in parties on Xbox | Xbox Support

    1. Verify it’s not a fault with the earphones as you don’t want to go through all the troubleshooting steps only to find out this is simply the problem. Start a party (you don’t necessarily need to invite anyone) then speak directly into the mic. If your headset is working, you’ll see the ring around your gamerpic light up. Another way to confirm the mic works correctly is to try the earphones on another device to test the mic - a phone call, perhaps? If you experience the same issue on other devices, or if other earphones/headphones work okay with the same Xbox controller then you’ll know the fault is with the earphones mic. If this is the case, you’ll need to replace the earphones in question. You can also test the mic at https://mictests.com/ on a smartphone, tablet, PC etc.

You mentioned you’re using Apple earphones - are these the official, genuine ones? Generic accessories are usually not completely compatible with all devices and/or don’t work as expected, with performance issues.

    2. Check the audio settings in the party. Make sure you’re not muted in the party - open the Xbox guide and go to the “parties & chats” tab, then select your party and press Y on your controller to mute/unmute your mic. Switch between game and party chat to see if that helps. Then increase the volume in “audio & music” settings under the party options. Configure the Headset chat mixer and volume options in particular.

    3. Privacy & online safety settings. Check that your privacy settings and online preferences allow communication with everyone which would affect weather other players would be able to hear you. The specific option to enable/allow: “Others can communicate with voice, text or invites” - set to ‘everyone’ (if you prefer, you can set this to just friends if everyone in the party are on your friends list). For cross-play, “People outside of Xbox Live can communicate with voice and text” - set to allow.

To adjust your Microsoft account privacy settings, sign in to the privacy & online safety page. You can also make these changes on an Xbox One or Series X|S console. When making any account changes at Xbox.com, make sure to select ‘submit’ to confirm and save these changes.

Note: If you’re on a child account (under 18 in most countries), an adult from the same Microsoft Family to sign in to their Microsoft account to adjust your privacy settings for you. If you’re on a child account but not in a family, you’ll need to join one so that these settings can be adjusted at https://account.microsoft.com/family

If an adult updates your child account settings, you’ll need to sign out and then back in to to your account on your console for the updated settings to take effect.

    4. Update your controller. Any important, essential fixes and improvements would be applied in the firmware and software update. Updates usually help in these situations, as you’ll receive necessary fixes sometimes with a significant difference. If using an official Xbox One/Series X|S controller:

Update your Xbox Wireless Controller | Xbox Support

If you’re using a third party controller, however, refer to the manual for the correct controller model from the manufacturer, and install the controller app (if one is available) to configure the settings and perform diagnostic tests. I suggest contacting the controller manufacturer directly for assistance with this.

    5. Your NAT type - Ideally you want this to be ‘Open’ and not ‘Moderate’ or ‘Strict’. An Open NAT is always preferable and recommended. I suggest to reset your router as this can help with most network errors. Contact your ISP and/or router manufacturer to troubleshoot this further. It would be best to reach out to them if this continues or if you experience further issues - they can advise and assist better than we can here on the forum. This support guide may help:

I suggest to report this as a problem, if this continues.

Provide feedback as an Xbox Insider | Xbox Support

Keep in mind that your controller may need to be repaired as a last resort if all else fails, which is an option to consider. If the controller is within warranty, repairs and replacements are free.

    Hope this helps! :)

    Kinect on series x

My guess is that if you have the adapter for the connect to work on the S, it will work on the acts. And I believe most of the functionality for Kinect will work when you are playing kinect enabled games. However beyond that, my guess is that since they
are not really supporting it anymore, outside of the game it’s basically going to treat it like another WebCam. You can use it as a WebCam and it has a microphone, but I don’t think it’s gonna do any more than that

    Xbox chat on PC

I don't know if it is related but I had a similar issue where my microphone was working in Discord for a few seconds then would stop. I ended up going to the Settings --> Privacy --> Microphone and view the apps that are allowed to use the microphone.
Xbox Game Bar is unchecked by default I think.

Also, if you have another program open that can use the microphone it will possibly override other programs. For example, The Division 2 game will make Discord no longer work if I turn the in game audio on to my main microphone.

Nobody can hear me in game/party chat any ideas?

Wireless earbuds that support Xbox connect, is there such a thing?

In theory yes. There are many adapters out there. Make sure you get one that has microphone support. You should see two stripes on the Jack.

    I can’t guarantee it’ll work for you, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t.
