Are you trying to recover access to your account? The best way is to use the recovery form if you don't have 2FA turned on https://account.live.com/acsr however, it will ask for a lot of information as Xbox have to be sure they are granting access to the account owner.

For some reason my new gamer tag linked itself to my old gamer tag email address. I don't know how to change that and to link my old gamer tag back to my Microsoft account. I believe that's why I cant play as my old game tag. Is there a way to fix that?

If you do not know the email address for the account but do know the Gamer tag you can call xbox support at 1800 4 my xbox or chat support at support.xbox.com/contact-us and if they can verify you ownership of the account they can tell you what your email
address is that is associated with the account.

if you don't know the gamer tag but have a credit/debit card on the account they can search for your account with one of those numbers and again if they can verify your ownership of the account they can tell you the email address for the account
