I can't install games to my external SSD... Please help!

    Hi All,

For the past couple of weeks, I've been trying to install games to my external SSD through the Xbox Game Pass App; however, the app complains that my SSD isn't set up as a location to install games:

FYI - I have been able to install games to my external SSD before, so I'm not sure why I can no longer do so. The SSD has been formatted to NTFS, and I've followed nearly all the troubleshooting steps suggested on the web to no avail (Mostly the ones outlined in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MG1NfRTgBQ).

Please note that my external SSD (DI can't install games to my external SSD... Please help! :) is already set up as the default save location for apps, docs, music, etc...

Hi and thanks for reaching Microsoft Xbox gamer's community. My name is Josef.
I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft Xbox user like you.

Hope you're doing great today despite this Edwin

Please try repairing and resetting gaming services :

Go to windows settings > apps > search for gaming services app > click on it and select advanced options.
After that, click repair and then reset
Restart the PC and try again

If that doesn't work try reinstalling Gaming Services using powershell command

Press Windows key + X and then select Windows PowerShell (Admin).

Type or copy / past the following command and press Enter:

    Get-AppxPackage *gamingservices* -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers

Restart the PC and Open the Xbox application.

A blue notification with the following message is going to appear at the bottom:
"This app needs an extra component. Gaming Services is needed for playing some games. Administrator approval required. Install"

Select Install to reinstall Gaming Services, once installed check again

Rise of the Tomb Raider only starts with DLC installed, if console is switched offline.

If anyone is interested, we managed to find that the problem only occurs if the game is installed on an external ssd.

If the game is moved from the ssd to the internal hdd the problem does not occur. Formating the ssd and moving the game back did not fix the problem. Other games launch fine from the external ssd.

The problem seems to be linked to (external?) ssds and (Rise of the Tomb Raider?) DLCs.

Can't install games on my external ssd even if I have 1TB of space left and hundreds of games already installed on it.

    Hey Hayden.

I have formatted my external SSD a few days ago, but before that, I tried seriously everything you recommended but to no avail.

I could not uninstall and install back to my external SSD. Xbox would only let me install on my internal and then again would not let me move it to my external. So RE7 just stayed in the internal hdd. Same with other games.

Like I said, things started to get tricky. Other games from years ago could install on External SSD without problems and some could not.

I'm still downloading a ton of games like Halo, Red Dead 2, GTA and others with insane amount of GB so this will take some time...

I'll let you know if anything new comes up :)

Thanks again for the help Hayden.
