I bought disc Minecraft but my Xbox says I need to buy it

It's probably the old Xbox One Edition of Minecraft, right?

Is the disc in the console?

The disc has to be in the console in order for the system to see the license for the game since it is a physical copy and not a digital one.

It says i can download the new update but when i try to it says i need to buy the game again

To set your expectations properly, all the successful purchases on the account is saved to your Order history: https://account.microsoft.com>; Order history real time. The game transaction should show up as " Completed "

When checking the game and the license make sure you’re that you are signed in with the same Microsoft account you used to purchase Minecraft.

Once see you the transaction as completed, then you should be able to play the game on that account.
