I think that is how works, because when I bought mine (Im from Europe), the warranty of Microsoft was only 1 year too, but the retailer shop where I bought was 2 years of warranty. For what I understand for this, is always 1 year of Microsoft's warranty,
you can have more, if you bought in a retailer shop and if in your country the retailers actually do more than 1 year.

I just found this out as well (not available from retailers), as my 360 controller that is less than a year old has broken. The only game I play is Forza 4 online and that would be a big issue for me if they are no longer made.

i purchased it new from a retailer through amazon. i have registered it which is why i found out that it was apparently out of warranty.
