I believe Dolby Surround Upmixing has been enabled when selecting the Atmos audio setting

I'm on the Alpha Channel. I might be going bananas, but I'm 90% confident that Dolby Upmixing has been enabled on the console in the absence of any settings toggle.

I first noticed this while streaming a football game on the ESPN app, of all things. I later tested a number of games. In the past, my front height channels were silent when Atmos/PCM was enabled on the console. Dolby Surround or DTS: Neural X cannot be enabled on my Yamaha AVR. That rules out accidentally selecting the upmixers + 5.1, which is what you'd typically do to get those Front Height channels working.

Now there is audio in those channels in non-Atmos games.

In fact, one of the more impressive examples is Metal Gear Solid 2/3 remaster, made backwards compatible for the X1. More specifically, the intro to MGS2 has a bridge/ship scene in pouring rain. That rain came almost exclusively from my front height speakers.

Again, unless I've lost my mind, this did audio behavior not occur in the recent past. I would have to disengage Atmos on the X1, drop down to 5.1 PCM, and then enable either the DSU or DTS:X upmixers. And those, as we know, can be hit or miss with accuracy depending on the game and which upmixer you use. I'm currently testing out Batman Arkham Asylum and Outer Wilds. Gameplay has audio coming from a variety of sources.

Can anyone test this out? Or confirm this was typical behavior that I somehow missed?

    Thanks.

Dolby Atmos on Xbox One X = issue !

    Hi RomiDumitru,

*maybe* this "problem" is exactly how the Dolby Atmos App on Xbox One X works.

Dolby Atmos native content? perfect! Dolby Atmos playback.

No Dolby Atmos? the App upmix current audio track to Dolby Atmos (the headphones features works in this way).

I don't know if is intentional.

Xbox One X sound to audio receiver

You can buy HDMI ARC converter boxes on Amazon that will enable HDMI-ARC on old sound systems, they are essentially dummy sound systems that pose as an ARC receiver then pass the audio to the sound system plugged in at the other end.

Be aware that HDMI-ARC is no different from optical, it only supports PCM 2.0 (stereo) Dolby 5.1 and DTS 5.1, thats all you get. If you desire HD audio formats or PCM 7.1 you need a 4K/HDR compatible sound system.

Dolby Atmos is buggy on Xbox because of the way the Xbox audio engine works, MS have an audio upmixer that merges the system UI sounds with audio streams but this does not play well when bitstreaming Atmos. Which on a technical level is handing off the audio
from Xbox to the sound system to decode so you can see why their upmixer causes all sorts of problems. There really should be a toggle in the audio settings to disable the upmixer (thereby muting system audio) when using Atmos or bitstreaming Blu-ray/Movie/TV
    audio in general.

Atmos is not designed for gaming in short.

Dolby Atmos-Channel upmixer ON or OFF? For Xbox series X

Hi and thanks for reaching Microsoft Xbox gamer's community. My name is Josef.
I'm an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft Xbox user like you.

Hope you're doing great today Emergence

You can leave the setting ON. If you leave it ON this is what the feature does:

"this upmixer was made to be compatible with traditional channel-based and Dolby speaker systems. What the Dolby upmixer does is expands the audio of channel-based content (includes Native Streaming, 5.1, and 7.1 content) for playback through a Dolby Atmos system. This upmixer allows for a more spacious audio ambiance. Dolby states, “This new technology will process and upmix channel-based content to as many as 17 speaker locations at listener level and to 10 Dolby Atmos-enabled or overhead speakers.”"

Apparently dolby atmos will only transfer through hdmi and not optical,i was just wondering whether it is something to do with hdr
Do you have "let receiver decode audio" enabled in Settings > Disc & Blu Ray > Blu ray?

And after that go to Settings > Display & Sound and go, under HDMI audio, to Bitstream format and select "Dolby Atmos for home theater".

After doing this the blue light for Dolby Atmos should be lit on your receiver when it is decoding Dolby Atmos input.
