I am having trouble adding a second player controller

I have done as you mentioned. It updated with the usb and is recognized by the console. both controllers are there on the screen under setting...both are assigned. so we tried to do the split screen with 2 people playing Plants vs Zombie Garden Warefare
as a test....and again it fails. One controller is recognized for the game and the second one cant be added as a new one or as a guest. When I try to add under my name it tells me one controller is already assigned. trying to get it added as a new player it
asks for email and password and then tells me it is already being used . trying to add as a guest it tells to try again later (which never works). Am I expected to create a second email and password just to get the controller to work? or would that even work,
as the second email wouldn't have the gold account associated to it. (again, I can swap the controller out....which ever one starts on the console is recognized, the second one not)

I have found that only the second player can actually sign in with the second controller. For example: I was signed in as player one. I tried to sign in as player two with the second controller. I was having the same issue as you. But I had my wife pick
up the second controller and it let her sign in as player two. The xbox knows who's in the room and will automatically sign you in.

Once you launch the game using the first player controller, kindly sign in on a different account using the second controller before clicking the "add the second player".

It depends on the game that you're trying to play. It should also support 2 players but for starters, you need to have the second profile signed in and then turn on the second controller. Most games will have a prompt to just press and hold a button for the second player.

May I ask what is the game that you're trying to play with a second player?
