In order to use the online multiplayer feature in Xbox console, you will need to have an active "Xbox live gold or Xbox game pass ultimate subscription"

These subscriptions will enable your account to gain access to the online multiplayer features.

You can purchase the subscription via Microsoft Xbox Store online.

You can also purchase the subscription on physical Xbox gift card from physical retailers such as Amazon and then redeem the codes by signing your Microsoft account on redeem.microsoft.com

Once you have purchased the subscription, you can check the status of it by signing your account on account.microsoft.com > services and subscription.

I know you are trying to help, but like I said I can no longer play story mode offline. I can play it while I am online. I have limited internet access. I have played story mode for years not connected to the internet by using the original RDR2 discs. But since the latest Xbox one update I can play it no more unless I keep a continuous internet connection. All my other offline games work fine. I have the latest RDR2 updates.

Hi Wurmtongue! I'd be happy to help you. First, you DO have to do the initial update during first time setup, it's a required update and there's just no way around it. That said, however, if you do the first time setup on your home network, you should be
able to play offline the rest of the time. The network connection is only required for the first time setup.

As for the hotspot idea, I can't give a definitive answer on that, as I've not tried it myself. I believe a broadband connection is required, and I'm not certain if an iPhone hotspot can provide the connection necessary for the setup. (It's a huge update,
and while Wi-Fi may do the trick, I can't swear to 3G/4G being able to handle it.

Thanks and does the secondary console have to be connected to the internet to play it, because that's the whole point of this since I am only connecting it once so i can download the game.

Is there a way to buy a game and be able to play it on my primary and secondary where secondary will not be connected to the internet and will be using an offline profile and primary will be connected.
