How to use headphones only for sound

I want to be able to plug in my headphones into the audio jack on my Xbox one controller and hear sound through my headphones only, everytime i plug in my headphones into the controller the sound comes through the headphones themselves and the tv speakers,
how do i change that? Thanks

Turtle Beach Headphones

I have Turtle Beach HP2A headphones and they are designed for a PC. I recently came over to Xbox and would like to use them. I have an External "Diamond Extreme 7.1" sound card, but it"s not required to use the card for the headphones. Does anyone have an
idea how I can use the HP2A headphone with the "New Xbox"? Thanks

To my knowledge, you can not adjust game sound to come through the headphones only. However, you can do this for chat by going into the chat setting and voicing through the headset only. As far as game sound, I usually turn my tv all the way down and just
turn up the game sound on my controller with the headset adapter.

I have noticed that too. At this time I just mute the TV. Probably not the optimal solution but at least it works.

You can also use them as ordinary wired headphones, I have the cable running from the headphones to the adapter but only get the game sound,

I have no sound at all in my headphone. only when im long pressing a button on the adapter for my headphones. and im using the xbox stereo headset.

The audio setting is set to windows sonic for headphones.

As the page that XBF Javier R linked to explains, the console can't know if you use the headset for chat only or for game sound as well, and will not mute the TV sound output.

If you don't get game audio from your headset, but chat sound is working, then go to the settings, and under "Display & Sound" enable game sound through your headphone.

Unless you have bought the Dolby Atmos for Headphones app (and not only the free trial app), you should use Stereo or Windows Sonic to get game sound from your headphones.

If neither game sound nor chat sound is coming from the headset, try the headset on a different controller, or try different headphones on your controller (e.g. earplugs that came with your smartphone or something like that).
