How to use gift card balance instead of credit card - family member purchase

Hi all,

I need help on using Xbox gift card for a child purchase.

My teenager applied a new gift card to his family account. We could see the correct dollar balance there after he applied it. No problem so far.

He then tried to purchase a new game for download and it required my approval. This was not a surprise since it is M for mature.

The trouble happens when I went to approve it. After hitting "approve" it took me over to payment options. One option was my credit card. The other option was to redeem a gift card. Since he had already applied the gift card prior, then I have no choice
but to use my CC? Just for grins I tried to use the gift card but naturally it said it had already been redeemed.

I asked him to try to download again and it said something like, "it looks like your parent approved. hang tight. they will be with you soon." But it is still not able to be downloaded.

So my question is, how can we use his redeemed gift card balance in this game purchase?

Just as others have said, check for any taxes that would go beyond the value of the gift card. When your son goes to the purchase page, does it show the gift card value on the screen?

Two things to check. 1) Make sure the funds were redeemed on their account. There's not a family account for funds. So if the card was redeemed on your account and not theirs, only you would have access to them. You can verify by signing into the account
at http://account.microsoft.com

2) If they were redeemed on their account, are they trying to purchase a backwards compatible game on the One? In order to use the funds from a gift card on backwards compatible content, the purchase has to be made on a 360.

Remember, gift cards are bought with no tax but your game taxes are charged on xbox itself. If you have a $20 card and the game cost $20, the remaining owed taxes will need to be paid and thats why it asks about the credit card. When it says they will be
with you soon, check your emails and bank statements, it could be waiting for email approvement for extra measures for the safety of your cards and child. If all else fails, contact support teams about billing!

try on payment options set up as first payment option micosoft account balance, so you will be charged the game there, in case the balance is not enough you will ask you to pay the rest
with another payment option that you have linked as credit card, debit or paypal, I leave you a link to follow how to change your payment options

I looked last night on that. I did not see that as an option. That would solve the issue tho!!!
