How to use controller on PC for games

This is a gaming system for my grandson

Game is minecraft

I bought and installed the Xbox 360 controller USB wireless. How do I activate it for games on the PC?

How to use xbox one controller on PC

So I've plugged my wired xbox one controller into an xbox one, updated the firmware and now plugged it into my PC. It vibrates when you first conenct it to the PC and the xbox logo is lit up and I'm able to use the logo to go into xbox store etc, however
I've run a couple of games now and none have responded to the controller.

Admittedly these games are a little old (2011-13 mostly), so are some games too old to support xbox one controllers on PC? Do I need batteries in the controller even though it's wired, lighting up and vibrating? Any help would be wonderful.

I did that to connect the XBOX 360 controller (wireless) to the USB port on the Win8.1 system.
