How to switch to 2 player mode

Hi. I have just bought my son an xbox one. He is trying to play lego Jurassic Park offline. I have 2 questions. 1) how does he switch to 2 player so his sister can pay with him? 2) how can he save his progress offline? Any help would be really appreciated.!

How to switch active player?

I've just purchased an Xbox One and set up the family with different sign-ins.

I'm confused about how to switch between players when multiple family members are signed-in.

Eg. if one person is playing Zoo Tycoon under their own sign-in and we want to give another kid a go using their own sign-in (so they get to see their own zoo and obtain their own achievements), what's the quickest way to do this?

I've read elsewhere that you can simply hand the controller to another player and Xbox will switch to that player. However, I've never seen this happen - they just seem to carry on playing the first person's game (eg. in the same zoo). (It's difficult
to test as the Kinect sensor often doesn't recognise people, despite constant "retraining")

The only way I can switch to the other player's game (eg. zoo) is by signing out the first person (to close the current game instance) then switching active sign-in to the second player and restarting the game (eg. Zoo Tycoon), which can take several minutes
and test the patience of our kids.

Similarly with other games, such as Forza 5, where I'd like to quickly switch between active players with their own cars and achievements.

We've tried saying "Xbox show my stuff", which successfully goes back to the home screen and seems to "activate" the current player, but if you resume the current game (eg. Zoo Tycoon, Forza 5) from the home screen it carries on with the old person's zoo/car
and settings.

I'm new to the Xbox, so I'm not sure what the correct term is for switching active player. I've seen information about switching profile, but this seems to be for two profiles between one person.

To go into 2 player on the Lego games, often all that needs to be done is to connect a second controller to the console, and log a second account into that controller. Disconnecting the controller should bring the game back into a 1-player game.

To save the progress, he can do the same as he would do online. Pause the game, then go to quit and choose the save & quit option.
