How To Setup Child Account

this is for offline xbox live:

create a xboxlive profile if you have not already then go to parental controls and select what you want for the kid (also make sure you know the 4 digit code to get into it) and then it's all set up!

ok for the child account to set up online gaming here is what you do:

one you make a xboxlive profile on the xbox

then you hit join xbox live under social

then you have to make a email account for him (but you don't have to let him access it as a email account)

next you set his birthday under 18

then you set up the billing (note you dont have to put a credit card and you can use the place you bought the xbox as the mailing address-- but be sure to change it if you need your xbox to be repaired)

then it will automatically set up a random generated gamertag, if your kid likes it he can keep it (like mine) but he can change it, but make sure it's ok under the code of conduct

then it will say this parent account (you) will shadow this child account hit yes

then after you set up your kid's account you go to parental controls and you can change anything you want for him (so like no rated M games, or allow voice chat, etc)

then if you have a gold card you can put that on his account and he can play online and use apps!

and then you are all set just ask if you have any other questions!

Let me explain a couple things to you on how MS determines the whether an account is a child account or not.

1. Date of birth (DOB) when the account was ORIGINALLY setup. This is set in stone and even if you go in and change it the system only sees the DOB when it was originally setup.

2. Whether an account is in a family as a child account.

So with that being said until an account reaches its 18 birthday per the DOB when it was originally setup it is required by law to be part of a family as a child account.

The reasoning for that is that an account is required to agree to the MS terms of use for the account (which is a contract) and it is illegal to go into a contract with minors.

The system will allow you to remove yourself from a family as a child but if your DOB when it was originally setup is still under 18 it will not allow you to do anything on the account till you are added back to a family account as a child.

It would be a good idea to setup child accounts for each child you have, and if you already have game pass ultimate, then using the account that has it then make the console the home Xbox, and everyone that uses the console will have access to it.

Are you possibly still under a family as a child?

There are two ways to be considered a child.

1. DOB on account when it was originally setup. This will require the account to be setup in a family as a child account that would have an adult to control its options.

2. If it was originally setup as a child in a family with a child account and it reaches the age of majority (18 in most countries) and is still under a family as a child account then it would still be considered a child account. To fix this you would just
need to sign in with the adult account at account.microsoft.com/family and remove yourself from the family.

This will put you into your own family as an adult AS LONG as your DOB when your account was originally setup is truly over the age of majority. If it is not then you would not be able to do anything on your account till you are added back to a family as
a child account.
