How to save and transfer data from old console to new

So I am planning on getting one of the new Xbox consoles when they come out in a few months. I currently have an Xbox One S and I am trying to sell it. I need to know if there is a way to save and store all data, settings, purchased games, gamerscore, my
profile, game progress, etc. on a separate storage device and how big it needs to be to hold all of my data. I also need to know if its possible to transfer all of my old settings and games etc. to one of the new Xbox consoles when the time comes.

Im pretty new to Xbox so it would be greatly appreciated if someone could tell me how to safely store all of my old data and put it on a new console. -because I really don’t want to lose my game progress and minecraft builds or any digitally purchased games.

Hi,

You don't need to back up your account or store it somewhere for your new console. All you need to do to insure your purchases, achievements and save games transition to your new console is to know your email address and password for your Microsoft account.
You log in with this account on your new console and everything comes with you.

If you want to say 'hit the road running', you can move your downloaded/installed games to an external hard drive. When you get your new console you sign in with your current account profile and attach your external hard drive. All your games will be there
and you will be able play them pretty much straight away.

Note that if you opt for the Series S your disc games will no longer work as the Series S has no Blu-ray drive. No problem with Series X though.

To clarify further, the
Network Game Transfer would only transfer the games and apps from the old console to the new console; other data like profile data and save data is attached to an account's profile and backed up to Xbox Live. To redownload the save/profile data for an account
in a particular game, just launch that game from the console while the account is signed in and connected to Xbox Live

The old files are attached to your old console. Transfer the saves via USB to the console and your save data should be fine.
