How to reconnect Xbox controller to PC after playing wired to charge (Bluetooth)

I have an Xbox one s controller with the BT HID functionality. I can pair it via BT to my windows 10 PC without issue. However, if I need to charge it, I have to plug it in. Mind you I am plugging it into the same PC it is already paired to, this is not an issue of switching devices.

When it is done charging, I disconnect the USB and it just flashes. The controller will not reconnect to the PC via bluetooth. There is no option to reconnect in the BT menu or in the devices menu in the action panel. I have to remove the device entirely and repair the controller to windows via BT.

Is there a way to retry a connection with a paired device?

Again, I would like to make it very clear. This controller is being paired to and connected to USB on the SAME PC. I am NOT jumping to another computer or device and trying to reconnect to the original PC.

I just got in an Elite Series 2 controller with the same issue. it is not removed from the devices list but still does not reconnect to bluetooth when disconnected from USB (charging/accessory app). The status light (xbox home button) just flashes slowly. It continues to do this until it shuts off or I delete and pair the controller again.

side note: elite controller is fully updated

I am now on 21H2 and have the same problem but worse. Now when I connect the controller via USB after BT pairing, the controller is deleted from the devices list under bluetooth.

It does not remove it from the list when the controller is off and turned back on again. Only when it has been connected to USB.

Hello Overcustomized, have you checked if you have the latest version of Windows installed, at 21H2, because recently came out the latest update to Windows 10 and 11.

See which version of Windows 10 you have

Updates often seen as optional, Microsoft released major fixes this week, and make sure you have the Xbox Companion App installed.

After that check the Xbox Accessories App if your controller doesn't have any pending updates.

It doesn't really matter if the PC/Laptop has Bluetooth or not though. The user is trying to get the controller to work with a wire, which worked before, and is the same wire I'm using. My PC doesn't have Bluetooth.

I already stated earlier that the Play and charge for the Xbox One also sends data, and it can turn a wireless controller into a wired controller. Only the 360 play and charge is just a charger.

So your controller never reconnects when you turn it off and on when on with Bluetooth?

The re-sync after charging is how the controller is meant to work, it's not a fault. Pretty sure this is down to the support of the gaming receiver peripheral which uses its own wireless protocol.

For example, connecting via wire on console automatically syncs for wireless. The same would be true for PC.
