How to properly connect the Xbox one controller?

Just getting the xbox one I was wondering how to properly connect the xbox one controller to my console? i know you press the button on top of the controller but what's the "proper way"

You've already pretty much mentioned how to do it.

To be more specific, you'll also need to press the sensor button on the left side of your console. It's right along-side the disc-slot; it looks like 3 curved lines - ")))"

Once connected, you may also want to update your controller, which you can do through the settings menu (found under the apps section of the my games and apps menu on the homescreen; I recommend you pin the settings menu for easier access later as well).
Once you find it, it tells you step-by-step how to update it, so I won't need to explain that here.

When you press the button on controller do you immediately press the button on the console as well? Do you have to hold any button down or just press it? I was also told you press the guide button as well? True or false?

 

press the button console... then press sync button on controller (while controller is on) same way with the 360 just about

 

Sounds good. You just tap the buttons once right? You don't have to hold them down?
