How To Install Update If Internal Drive Is Full

Hi SquirmyEntree8! You will have to move the entire game over the External Hard Drive in order to install the update. In order to do this, you select the game, choose manage, and it will allow you to choose where to keep the game isntall/data. This may be
a problem though if there is an update pending, as it may not let you move the game if it is not fully updated. If this is the case, you could move other games to the enternal drive in order make space on your internal drive, and then install the update then.

What game are you trying to update, and where is the game located?

Note that if the game is located on the internal drive, and the internal drive is full or nearly full, you won't be able to update the title, regardless of the free space on the external. Games can only be updated to the drive they are installed to.

Is this the problem you are experiencing?

I ran into this same problem with an update for project spark. It turns out that I had Spark saved on my internal hard drive that was full, so when it tried to install the update there wasn't enough room. I had to delete one of my old games off the internal
and then install the update.

For some reason the console doesn't want to update games if the internal drive is at capacity even if you have plenty of space available on the external drive.

Actually there is a very good 'reason' for this behaviour. When games are updated, the files
aren't added to the console and placed in free hard drive space. They have to go where the game is installed, regardless of how much free storage you have.

When you download an game update - or when the console does it automatically in sleep mode, it actually updates the files
where the game is installed directly. So, if you had an external drive but the game in question that needs an update is installed on the internal drive, this is the location where the update will go. Indeed, it's the only place the update
can go because updates need to modify and add files to the game install location.

So, if Internal hard drive is nearly full with say only say 5GB free, and the game is installed on the internal but needs say a 6GB update, the console won't be able to update the game. It doesn't matter how much overall free space there is left.

You're 100% correct about leaving some free storage available on the drive where the game is located, and this is the reason why
